The objectives of the forum are fostering the discussion about opportunities for doing business in the country and ways of Belarus promotion as an advantageous investment destination, and producing a further developments roadmap that will lead to more opportunities for investment and contribute to the development of both public and private sectors of the Belarusian economy. For discussion of these issues the forum will gather experts and top management from across the Belarusian government, local companies, foreign business, and international financial institutions.
The Organization Team of the forum includes the National Agency of Investment and Privatization, UNITER Investment company, and independent research institute BISS. The event has also been included in the program of measures approved by the Government of the Republic of Belarus.
As stated Alex Pikulik, Academic Director of BISS: «We want the Forum to become a permanent platform for discussions of the ways to develop Belarus. Its development is a common challenge that cannot be executed without a proper communication of all parties: the international community, the Belarusian authorities, foreign and local businesses. During the Forum, specific proposals designed by the expert community under the project “REFORUM” will be discussed. We hope that these solutions will benefit the development of Belarus.”
During the press conference, importance and relevance of the international cooperation in financial and investment spheres in terms of Belarus were highlighted. According to Natallia Nikandrava, Director of the National Agency of Investment and Privatization of Belarus, in the last decade, the role of international institutions in the global investment processes has become even bigger, especially in the Eastern Europe. Along with providing foreign capital, these institutions offer opportunities for countries to adapt to situations on the international markets. Natallia added: “Unfortunately, today we see a certain information vacuum in Belarus regarding IFI cooperation. We want to change this situation and to help Belarusian businesses attract external funding for their investment projects, in particular the capital of international financial institutions. Besides, we should face to the fact that cooperation with IFIs will enable our country to intensify its participation in the programs that promote both economic and social development of the state.”
In turn, Roman Osipov, Managing Director of the Investment Company UNITER, argues that international and regional financial institutions are interested in extending or renewing their presence in Belarus today. He stated:«Today, it is extremely important to offer specific areas of cooperation, in particular, projects which will benefit the development of the Republic of Belarus but at the same time meet the requirements of such institutions. It could be environmental, infrastructural, financial projects, investments in the manufacturing sector. To initiate this process, the practical discussion between IFIs, representatives of the state bodies, banks, and other Belarusian institutions is needed. The open and constructive dialogue is crucial for the development of necessary conditions for a number of new directions and projects, supported by international and foreign financial resources, which are to be launched.”
The expected participants are international financial institutions, investment and equity funds, foreign investors, funds and technical assistance programs which are either providing funding for Belarusian economy, or considering working in Belarus, the government of the Republic of Belarus, local businesses, and expert community.
The forum will become a venue for 14 events, during which experts will discuss the strategy of attracting foreign investment to Belarus, prospects of investment cooperation with financial institutions of the EU, opportunities for the Eurasian Economic Union and China, investment projects for US investors, and much more.
