The situation in the Republic of Belarus is rather difficult today, so holding the Forum is the strategically important decision for our country. According to Alex Pikulik, the Academic Director of the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies (BISS): “Investors will be able to observe potential of Belarus not only as the country of oil refining and engineering, but also as having the potential in other industries.” In his belief, he Forum is the prospective way to initiate changes in our country and improve the business climate.
Alex added that the ultimate objective of the Forum is to foster a dialogue between the international community, the Belarusian authorities, foreign and local businesses. He believes that the development of the Republic of Belarus is a common problem which could not be resolved without a proper communication of all the parties.
From her side, Natalia Nikandrova, the Director of the National Agency of Investment and Privatization of Belarus noted that the Agency aims to introduce Belarus as a promising investment site, and to demonstrate the possibilities of the cooperation with the international financial institutions.
Following, Roman Osipov, the Director of Investment Company “UNITER” said: “Due to the relief of sanctions, the Republic of Belarus is experiencing the increased interest from the investors’ side. Some of them haven’t already been to Belarus for 5-6 years. Nowadays, the situation has changed: investors make trips to Belarus in order to investigate the current situation. This year, it is highly important for us to introduce projects of high quality to financial institutions.” In his words, this could be environmental, infrastructural, financial, manufactural projects.
A new list of enterprises for privatization is prepared Natalia Nikandrova announced that today a list of 10 new enterprises for privatization is prepared: “These companies could be attractive for investors, because they operate in their area of interest. The companies are also profitable and have a strategy for the further development. We expect that the privatization of these ten companies will be approved by the government within a month.” After the government’s approval, the names of these companies will be revealed. Natalia noted that these 10 companies were selected from the pool of over 3000 proposed companies.
“Rather than simply sell these businesses, we aim to find the different means of financing: i.e. the additional issue of shares, purchasing the controlling stake by investors.” Natalia added that the Center of State-Private Partnership will be established under the National Investment and Privatization Agency.
The expected participants are international financial institutions, investment and equity funds, foreign investors, funds and technical assistance programs which are either providing funding for Belarusian economy, or considering working in Belarus, the government of the Republic of Belarus, local businesses, and expert community.
